The 2014-15 school year promises to be dynamic and enriching. One of the most dramatic changes occurring across the Morgan Hill Unified School District is a shift toward Common Core State Standards. Common Core State Standards were conceived three years ago to develop a set of consistent, voluntary, internationally-benchmarked academic standards in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics that would be implemented across the nation so students in every state would be prepared with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in college or a career.
MHUSD has embraced Common Core standards-based instruction and our teachers are deeply committed to ensuring students are prepared for academic success, positioned to succeed in college, and compete in the 21st century workforce. While most students and their families were enjoying the summer break, many of our teachers volunteered part of their summer to invest in Common Core training and adapt their lesson plans to align with the new standards. The summer session was a part of a larger three year plan of staff development that will continue to support teachers in their acquisition of instructional strategies to best meet the needs of all students as we transition to this new approach to teaching and learning. Common Core State Standards guarantee today’s youth are fully prepared for the future, and position our nation to compete successfully in the global economy. With students, parents and teachers on the same page and working together toward shared goals, we can be confident that our students will make progress each year and graduate from school prepared to succeed in college and/or the 21st century workforce.
