PRESS RELEASE— June 7, 2017 —  At its monthly Board of Education meeting last night, Morgan Hill Unified School District (MHUSD) Board of Trustees unanimously awarded Blach Construction Company (Blach) and its architect-partner Quattrocchi Kwok Architects (QKA) with a $39.5 million design-build project to redevelop Britton Middle School. This will serve as a flagship project for the voter-approved Measure G school facilities improvement bond program.

The new Britton Middle School project includes several new buildings along the Monterey Road side of the campus. These will include a mixture of single and two-story classroom buildings, a student union that will house the library, and new administration offices. These structures will be centered around outdoor, collaborative learning areas and serve, not only as the new front of the school but also as a landmark entrance to Morgan Hill’s downtown.

“It’s a very exciting time to be part of the Morgan Hill community,” said Steve Betando, MHUSD Superintendent. “Thanks to Measure G funds we have been able to make many upgrades to our campuses, but the much needed redevelopment of Britton is a project that the community has been looking forward to. The response has been overwhelmingly positive and I have no doubt that Blach and QKA will turn Britton into an environment where our middle schoolers will continue to flourish and that our community will embrace.”

In addition to supporting the needs of the Britton Middle School program, the proposal by Blach-QKA includes a design that is solar-ready and has the potential to achieve Zero Net Energy (ZNE) consumption; meaning the total amount of energy used by the building on an annual basis is roughly equal to the amount of renewable energy created on the site. The concept builds upon a similar building type that the Blach-QKA team has delivered Central Middle School in San Carlos School District and in the process of building Cupertino High School in Cupertino Unified School District. The California Division of State Architect (DSA) pre-check approved building models, are designed to meet the green building standards of the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) and the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) gold level certification standards.

“Rebuilding Britton is extremely critical for the students, faculty and the surrounding community of Morgan Hill,” said MHUSD Director of Construction and Modernization, Casino Fajardo. “Ultimately, the process to select a partner was extremely competitive and our decision was not made lightly. We are very excited to partner with Blach and QKA on this project and are confident they’ll bring our vision for a state-of-the-art Britton Middle School campus to life.”

The design of the new Britton Middle School is starting immediately and groundbreaking is slated for January 2018. Construction on the classroom buildings is expected to be complete by the time school resumes in the Fall of 2018 and the new library, administrative center, and student union anticipated to be ready in early 2019.

“We understand how important redeveloping Britton Middle School is for Morgan Hill at-large. And everyone on our team, several of whom reside in Morgan Hill, is excited to be a part of it,” said Dan Rogers, executive vice president & COO for Blach. “Together with QKA, we are committed to maximizing the investment MHUSD is making and working with them to quickly deliver a flexible, high-quality learning environment that the City is proud of for years to come.”
